A strong and supportive community has never been more important. As such, the outreach of Northern View — whose mission is to help improve the lives of Berwick-upon-Tweed residents — has never been more vital.
And aided by a £500 grant it received aspart of Goswick Golf Links’ new Community Fund programme, Northern View has been empowered to do even more.
“Thanks in part to the grant, we were able to open our doors during the winter to offer a ‘warm space’ for people who were experiencing fuel poverty in light of rising energy costs,” said NorthernView’s Karen Renton. “The funds helped to offset our fuel costs on days when we would otherwise be closed. Local residents in need were then able to come to us for some warmth, a hot drink and some soup. As such, this grant helped people on a very fundamental level. We are really grateful to Goswick for the support.”
In addition to the warm-up, Northern View offered residents access to TV and newspapers and a chance to recharge their mobile phones. Transportation was provided to anyone who was unable to get to their location.
This organisation was originally founded in1978 as the Jubilee Social and Community Club. It operated under that nameuntil 2019 when it was relaunched as Northern View with a renewed focus oncommunity support. Even its building reflects this commitment as it was paidfor by the fundraising efforts of the former Spittal Residents Association.
Goswick set up its new Community Fund last autumn and funded it through approximately 1% of the visitor green fees it collected during its previous fiscal year ending September 2022. Northern View is just one of seven initial recipients. Based on continued strong demand for golf on its authentic links course, Goswick is on track to renew the programme at the end of this fiscal year.
