The Goswick Golf Withdrawal Series: Day 18

April 10, 2020

Here’s the latest in a series of posts about what our members are doing to compensate for the lack of golf during the COVID-19 mandated lockdown.

What is your name? Sandra McGonigle

Where do you live? Tweedmouth

When did you become a member at Goswick? I first joined Goswick in 1978 after getting married and moving from Whitley Bay where I had been a member since I was 11 years old. Apart from two years out, I have been a member for 40 years — which makes me feel very old but also very privileged and lucky to have been able to have Goswick as my home club all this time.

What’s the one thing you miss the most about it during the shutdown? Aside from the joys of socialising with members, I really miss the constant challenge that Goswick provides. The mix of prevailing elements with what is a superb links course always tests my abilities mentally and physically. And, oh how I miss that distraction from the rest of life’s challenges right now! Not only because of COVID-19, but also because the course was approaching peak condition thanks to all the hard work of the greens staff and committee.

Sandra and Morris McGonigle

What’s one thing you are doing to try to fill the void? This has been a huge challenge. But with a golf mad fitness-fanatic of a husband at my side, I have not been bored. Within the confines of government advice, we have been running, cycling and walking. We’re getting in a bit of DIY when I can get Morris motivated. There has been plenty of swinging in the garden. And a daily ‘chipping into the washing basket’ contest has been on the agenda. We have also had regular PGA and European Tour fixes watching reruns of some of the previous years’ tournaments on Sky. We may even go further back in time and try to watch a few Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf episodes. Believe it or not, one of them features Morris as a spectator when he was a young lad! Or course, I wasn’t even walking at that time. 🙂
