It took more than 13 hours of first-rate golf played by some 135 local professionals and top amateurs, including a rather spectacular extra playoff hole, on Monday. But Goswick Golf Club was more than up to the challenge of Regional Qualifying for the 151st Open Championship, identifying eight very worthy players who will now advance to Final Qualifying to be hosted by Dundonald Links on 4 July.

To casual observers, it might have seemed it was a fait accompli that Daniel Bullen would capture his third consecutive club championship at Goswick Golf Club on Sunday — after he fired a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday. Rest assured, he didn’t see it that way.

There’s no substitute for getting an early start at learning a new skill. That certainly applies to athletic endeavours, which is why the Berwick Rugby Club has made its youth programme a top priority.

Every journey starts with a first step. And when it comes to football, Goswick Golf Club is very proud to play a small role in helping several youngsters on their way.

The recipients of Goswick Golf Link’s first-ever community grant programme gathered at the club recently to share how they will use the funds to help make a difference in Berwick-upon-Tweed and the surrounding area.

Slowly but surely, the days are lengthening — even if the temps aren’t always rising. And that means a new golf season, and the opportunity for a fresh start, will follow.

In its ongoing commitment to continually raising the standard of its James Braid-designed links, Goswick is looking to augment its greenkeeping staff with a trainee mechanic/greenkeeper.
